LAST HURRAH for 2015 Art Class - WORKBOOKS!

YOU GOT THIS!  (and do my work, though)

STEAM Workbooks are the assignment for each student who is taking art this Quarter.  It is an excellent opportunity to bring up your grade and to learn how the Arts are connected to other subjects.

Some grades will have it strictly for classwork and others will have it as classwork AND homework.

DID I MENTION IT'S GRADED?  It is!

5th Grade Scholars: bring your SYMMETRY PACKETS I GAVE YOU ON TUESDAY TO FRIDAY'S CLASS.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.  I
will have limited email access but I will write back when I can.

See you next year!

December Art Class Comes to an End

Welcome new Art Blog members (I'm talking to you, Ms. White)!  This blog is the best way to get updates on what is happening in Ms. Hillman's Middle School Art class.  This week will be the last week for formal art classes for 2015, as I am going away for the holidays.  Don't cry, though...you will see me again after the new year.  Be ready to be awesome(r) in 2016.

8th Grade Batik Artists

Scholars are finishing up dying their fabric.  The acrylic paint is acting as the dye because it is watered down and stains the fabric.  When the paint dries, we are ready to wash out the glue (replacing the traditional technique with wax).  Scholars will be attaching wooden dowels by sewing them on the top and bottom of the fabric. Students are going to be SEWING this week, which is pretty exciting.

Next week, there is a workbook packet for students to complete in my absence.  It has to do with art's connection to other subjects and is a great opportunity to boost up your grade.  Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Research Kings & Queens

Basquiat, New York Artist with Hatian roots.
Scholars have begun presenting their findings on the artists they chose for the research project.  Those who have presented already have done a fantastic job.  It is difficult to speak in front of an audience but a great skill to practice while in middle school.  The oral presentation will be graded on the slide criteria being met and the way in which the presentation is given (RUBRIC HERE).  The presentation schedule can be found on last week's blog post.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

Lichtenstein's appropriation of Comics
= Pop Art.

6th Grade Lichtenstein Wanna-bes

Scholars are getting familiar with the Pop Art movement and learning about Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.  They posed for photos for this project and BOY WERE THEY HAMS!  I love the personalities in Hampton!!!!!  Stay tuned for progress updates on this awesome and colorful project.

Later this week and all of next week there is a workbook packet for students to complete in my absence.  It has to do with art's connection to other subjects and is a great opportunity to boost up grades.  Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

5th Grade Line Artists

Calder-inspired artwork is coming to an end this week.  Scholars will critique each other's work and come up with the credit line (Title, materials used, date etc...) and the work will be hung in the 5th grade hallway to "OOOH" and "AHHHHH" at!

Asymmetrical Balance is happening here.
Next project will focus on the Principal of Design: Balance, including symmetry and asymmetry (and the differences between them)!  Students will have a packet to work on regarding this important design concept.

Later this week and all of next week there is a workbook packet for students to complete in my absence.  It has to do with art's connection to other subjects and is a great opportunity to boost up grades (did you catch that?...it's GRADED)!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

Blast from the ART Past

Special Shout out to Vance, who visited CPCS recently.  He was a scholar who was reluctant to push himself as a visual artist at first, but he tried, succeeded and made amazing artwork. TRY TRY TRY!  Here's a great song about trying.  "Try" by Jill Scott.
OKAY...down to business:

7th Grade Researchers

Mia is doing her project on SWOON.
(Can't wait to see the 10-slide presentation.)
PowerPoint Presentations begin this week.  Click HERE for the student presentation schedule.  Scholars can create a PowerPoint, Prezi or Google Presentation.  Be on time to class or you lose your spot and your grade.

The SLIDE OUTLINE is HERE.  The rubric is based on exactly what is on the outline, so use that as a checklist to your benefit.

If you received a bright green sheet, you must get your parent/guardian to sign it and you have until the date listed to return the work.  No exceptions.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

5th Grade Sculptors

Scholars will be completing their Alexander Calder-based wire sculptures next week.  Tuskegee scholars started to learn more about symmetry, which will be a basis for future artwork later this quarter.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

8th Grade Batik Artists

Taylah started from the MIDDLE,
now she's here.
Terry went super-detailed.
These are looking SO good.  Students are becoming more and more familiar with batik process because they are creating them!  This week scholars complete the painting portion and start washing out the glue to reveal their completed designs.  THEN WE SEW!  Watch out!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Hampton Goes POP
Roy Lichtenstein's "Wham"
Get ready, 6th grade!  You are about to be thrown into the world of Pop Art.  Scholars are going to learn about the art history of this art movement and will make Pop Art artwork that will blow your mind!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

ARTcember...here we come!

Chris Stain Street Art.  Look familiar?
I will keep trying to come up with new ways to sneak ART into your lives (and in these blog titles) and if you have any ideas, please let me know!

8th Grade Batik Artists

We have 6 classes left to complete the Batik Projects before the next big holiday break.  The last art blog post has a better version of the parts of the brain picture you were to color for the test.  COMPLETE IT USING THE 3rd page of the test that was returned last week to get extra points!  It's DUE MONDAY in class.  We will continue gluing our batiks this Monday and on Tuesday we paint using watered down acrylic for the 'dying' portion of batik.
Vocabulary and technique quizzes will continue in these coming weeks.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman and get the answers: jhillman@cpcsschool.org

5th Grade Sculptors

Calder Artwork Example
Tuskegee artists are doing REALLY well in their current attempts to be like Alexander Calder and it's not an easy task!  They drew contour line self-portraits (finding the inner and outer edges of their face) and from them, are now transforming their drawings into wire sculptures.  They have to make their sculptures sturdy  and not flimsy  so that the work can withhold the rough-and-toughness of 5th grade artists who are bending and twisting the wire!

We continue this week.  No homework!  Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman and get the answers: jhillman@cpcsschool.org

7th Grade Researchers

Howard students, your final, awesome, amazing research project - ALL THREE PARTS - are due Tuesday in class.  You will be handing in the rubrics for each along with your typed work.  IF YOU EMAILED IT TO ME, YOU WILL ONLY BE HANDING IN THE RUBRICS (PARTS 1 & 2 are HERE.   PART 3 RUBRIC is HERE.  Make sure you follow all criteria.   More information about class presentations will be given in class this week and posted on the blog so you always have it available to you.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman and get the answers: jhillman@cpcsschool.org

6th Grade Hamptonites!

The big reveal for your next project happens this Tuesday so come ready to be dazzled!  Enjoy your weekend!

You shouldn't have any questions about this...but if you do, Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org

Adios to November

As we slide out of November, it's important to remember that no matter what, we are a Community.  It's in the name of our school, for crying out loud!  I have two favorite holidays: Day of the Dead and Thanksgiving.  I am thankful for my students who push themselves to be creative, especially when it is difficult!

Kimora's Contour Line Drawing
5th Grade Sculptors

Scholars have been learning about Alexander Calder and his life and contributions to 3D artwork.  He invented the mobile!  Tuskegee students are transforming their self portrait drawings into 3-dimensional creations!   Here are some photos from the past project.  They will be returned to scholars shortly, but I'd like to brag one last time...
Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Money Makers

Kayla B's amazing artwork!
Malachi's money!
The self-portrait portion of the currency project was just completed and Hampton Rocked it!  The second quarter will have more homework assignments but until then, enjoy some amazing artwork from my students.

Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Researchers and Clay Recyclers

Howard students are DEEP in it!  The research paper criteria can be viewed in previous posts (check the archive on the left) and we have begun doing the physical work of recycling clay using plaster bats and slip (ask your scholar what that is..they know!).  Part 3 of the research project is due TUESDAY MORNING in class.  All sections should be typed in Times New Roman font, size 12.  Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

8th Grade Batik Artists

Test Page three - clearer!
Because of the Fall Harvest Festival, we will not be able to have Art Class on Monday, however, I will give students a chance to make up the LAST section of last Wednesday's test.  The pages (the brain sections AND the mandala) will be returned to scholars during the day on Monday and you can check HERE to color in the parts of the brain.  (Sorry for the poor quality given for the test!)

Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman:

Protect Yo heART - Quarter 2

Protect Yo heART.  Always.

This is a bit of graffiti that can be found on the streets of Bed-Stuy.  Are you doing what it commands!?  Look around and see that art is all around us in Brooklyn.

5th Grade Sculptors

Egon Schiele's Contour Line Self-Portrait
On Friday, Scholars watched a video by Alexander Calder and we went over how to answer the questions, which should be finished at home.  It will be graded as a homework assignment.

The Alexander Calder Video is HERE.  This is DUE TUESDAY, November 17th in Class.

Next week we continue to work on the wire sculptures based on the contour line drawings Tuskegee scholars drew of themselves.

Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Hampton

Sugar Skull art critique happened and scholars had good, positive things to say of each other's artwork.  There was also a vocabulary quiz given and scholars who received below a 70 have to have a parent/guardian sign it.

This week we will critique the currency project (which was put on hold for the special Mexican Holiday project Dia De Los Muertos) and start our big project for Q2.

Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

ARTvember & Quarter 2

Hello!  Quarter 2 begins this Monday and it's vital that scholars do their very best to complete assignments well and on time.  Make up work is not an option, as scholars must take responsibility for their grades!  All are capable of success, so do it!

8th Grade Batik Artists

Steps to the next project.  DUE MONDAY: TWO SKETCHES (directions below).
~ Create two mandala sketches (that fit on a 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper).   You can click here for visuals to the directions below.
  1) Draw a large circle on your paper (use something round to trace!)
  2) Draw one line HORIZONTAL line in the center of your circle and another VERTICAL line so you have 4 equal quadrants in the circle.
  3) Draw a small circle in the center of your large circle where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect.
  4) Create organic shapes coming out of the small circle into the quadrants.
  5) Add more shapes (they shouldn't be too small, though...!) and make sure they are symmetrical in your design (the same on both sides of the dividing lines).
  6) Continue to draw out from the center and fill the space.  You can go outside of the circle, but not too much.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Researchers

"Punctuated Blackness"
Kameelah Rasheed
(she could be the
artist you research!)
Scholars begin an artist research project and will have a chance to pick their artists for the class presentation.  If you have an idea of whom you want to research, EMAIL three choices to Ms. Hillman by Sunday @ 5 p.m.  class on Tuesday, November 10th.  Click here for some suggestions.  Otherwise, scholars will be choosing their artists in class.  While the internet is a wonderful resource, an approved list of web sites will be provided for the project.  All information must be properly cited, as plagiarism is unacceptable (for any research project!).

In other news, Howard scholars will be working on the research project and learning how to recycle clay in class.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Skull-designers!

Dia De Los Muertos sugar skull designs were a hit!  Students learned about the meaning behind Mexican sugar skulls and created their own celebratory skulls using acrylic paint and symmetry.

Back to currency project WRAP UP next week!!!!!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

5th Grade

Reminder that homework assignments are expected to be completed well and on time.  Please make sure scholars have work in their Art Folders on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays so they are prepared for class.
Alexander Calder worksheets about his life and the kind of kinetic sculptures he created were due in class on Friday.  This coming week we start the 3D self-portrait sculptures!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

Fall Back into ARTWORK

Change your clocks on Sunday, by the way!  Fall = clocks turned back 1 hour during daylight savings.

5th Grade Contour Line Artists

Scholars in Tuskegee are learning about the artwork of sculptor Alexander Calder, who spent time in France and created many wire toys and portraits.  Scholars have a worksheet due on Thursday and will need use of a dictionary and the internet to look up words and a credit line of one of Calder's art pieces.

If you have any questions, email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

Compliments of Mike D.

6th Grade Dia De Los Muertos Designers

The 6th grade began their sugar skull pattern designs on Thursday, but started learning about Dia De Los Muertos, which takes place on November 1st and 2nd every year.  It is safe to say that it is no longer strictly a Mexican holiday, and is a wonderful way to celebrate the lives of those who have left us too soon.  We continue and complete our sugar skulls on Thursday because there is NO SCHOOL TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3rd.

If you have any questions, email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Ceramicists

Howard students will be learning the ins and outs of recycling clay and will be recycling about 30 pounds of it!  Scholars are encouraged to bring an old shirt or smock to wear over their uniforms to avoid getting clay on themselves.  Students will also begin a research project in quarter 2 that requires them to learn about artists and artwork.

If you have any questions, email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

8th Grade ~ Spelman Artists

The Graphic Novels turned out really well overall.  Scholars handed in their finished pieces this past week, and while it was a long-term project, the variations in stories were very enjoyable to read.  There were very personal stories to mundane accounts of life, but all were interesting in their own way.

Next up, an in-depth look at batik!  What is Batik?  It's going to change your life and you walls because we are going to put a modern spin on an old technique.
If you have any questions, email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

ARTober Wind Up

As we say 'Adios' to October, we are happy to snuggle into November Art Projects!

8th Grade Graphic Novelists

Autobiographical Graphic Novels are DUE MONDAY.  All parts, including the cover with color!  We ink together in class. Bring a super fine Sharpie marker in if you have one.  That is all.

ALSO, DOJO IS BACK and I'm in charge of the incentive this week!  Get ready to dress up for Book  Character Day and reap the benefits of self-control and motivation through Dojo!

Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Sculptors

ARE WE or AREN'T WE WORKING WITH CLAY?  It depends on you.  For those of you who will be enjoying clay work, these are the requirements for the next project:
Example of a nature themed sculpture.

Criteria for Abstract Clay Sculptures:- must stand independently
- nature theme (you had to take photos of natural textures over the summer, so you can use that as a foundation for this project)
- No more or less than 5" high and 3 1/2" wide
- Must be interesting to look at from every angle
- Must have at least 1 exaggerated Principle of Design in sculpture

Alternate projects for non-clay-working students will be given in class.  Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Portrait Artists

Dia Di Los Muertos Sugar Skulls by P. Hillman
We started to work on our proportionately correct self-portraits at home and continued on our currency in class.  When you FOLLOW THE STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE SUCCESS!

This week we are going to pause from the Currency / Portrait projects and make artwork based on my favorite holiday!  It's going to be sweet, but you cannot eat (it)!

Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

5th Grade Sculptors

Gallery Walk @ CPCS
Profile Self-Portraits are now hanging on the walls of CPCS!  We had a gallery walk and students had a chance to leave positive feedback for their classmates.  It was a great way to see what everyone had created and how scholars expressed themselves through the line work.

During the last class, Tuskegee was introduced to the kinetic artwork of Alexander Calder.  Students are practically line experts now, so this next project about kinetic, contour line sculptures shouldn't be a problem.  Art History regarding Alexander Calder will play a big part in this project, as will drawing and sculpting out of wire (Calder's medium of choice!).

Vocabulary for this project: Contour Lines, Sculptor, Sculpture, kinetic, Alexander Calder (know what he did and a bit about his life).

Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

- 3 - 4 pages (one sided)

FINAL PIECE WILL HAVE ALL OF THE ABOVE and A COVER PAGE (requirements below)
PART 2:
- Black or blue ink outlines and Color in the panels (color pencils are great for layering and will be done in class)

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Sculptors

This week we embark on our next project that deals with clay, abstraction and the Principles of Design.  The Principles of Design homework is due in class Tuesday.  Click here to get the worksheet.

Howard students will be tested next week on the information found in the short video we watched in class: "What is Abstract Art?" by Frank Curcovik.  The video has a lot of great information regarding art history and the beginnings of art abstraction.  Pay attention to the art movements and the BIG NAMES associated with these times: Impressionism (Monet, Renoir), Post-Impressionism (Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh), Fauvism ("Fauve" is French for "wild beast") (Henri Matisse), Cubism (Pablo Picasso) and Abstract Expressionism (Jackson Pollack, Marc Rothko),   Abstract art does not have a recognizable subject or non-representational artwork...they want COLOR, FORM to stand out.

We start with properties of clay and explore how to manipulate the medium this week!  Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Currency Designers and Self-Portrait Artists

The money is IN and grades were returned last week.  This week we will practice drawing head-on portraits and understanding the proportions involved with art (Math!).  If you want to practice drawing facial proportions, CLICK HERE and follow the steps!  It's a SEQUENCE.

The currency project will be completed by the end of this week and then we will work on a project that has to do with Ms. Hillman's FAVORITE holiday.  HINTS: Symmetry and paint is involved and it fits in with cultural diversity you have been discussing in Advisory!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

Alexander Calder Wire Sculpture

5th Grade Portraits Artists

All I can say is "WOW...WOW WOW"!  Tuskegee completed their Self-Portrait Profiles and they are AMAZING!  You can look their artwork and get a feel for who they are as students and artists!  Their artwork will be the subject of the Art Bulletin board this week - first of the year!  Stay tuned for photos!

After we have a gallery walk about all of the beautiful work and review the plethora of things we learned in class for this project (Adjectives, 5 kinds of lines, 5 line variations, portraits, silhouettes, profiles, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, zig zag, curve, degree of curve, directional length, width and texture...WHEW!), we will start a 3D project based on Alexander Calder's sculptures.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

CPCS Art Happenings

8th Grade Graphic Novelists

Autobiographical means it happened, btw.
The Autobiographic Graphic Novels are coming along very nicely and Spelman scholars have part 1 of their project due at the end of class on Wednesday, October 14th. (REMEMBER, CPCS IS CLOSED MONDAY FOR COLUMBUS DAY).  Students have had two tests so far this Quarter, and many are doing very well!

The criteria for the 8th grade Graphic Novel project is:
- Beginning, middle and an ending ("To Be Continued" would be considered incomplete)
- At least 3 characters (you are one of them because it's autobiographical)
- Narrative boxes (a.k.a. captions)
- Thought bubbles
- Sound effects
- Dialogue
- A transition you were tested on (moment to moment etc...)
- 3 - 4 pages (one sided)

Ask your student about their story...you COULD be in it!

Next Project Sneak Peak:  Batik!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Sculptors

Jada's superb sculpture.
Kemar KILLED the project!
Ofumaka's Paper Totem
Paper sculptures were a challenge for Howard students because they not only needed to know and understand the properties of paper, but they had to create an independently standing sculpture based on what they learned about manipulating paper.  The results were wonderful!  The Exit tickets for the project asked students to describe their experiences in four words and then give reasons why they chose those words.  They did a great job all around!

Next project Sneak Peak: Abstract Sculpture with mud (a.k.a. clay).

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.
Andy Warhol Money Symbol

6th Grade Money Designers

The deadline is set for Tuesday, October 13th and at the end of class, Hampton students will hand in the first part of their currency project.  They will be graded and returned by Thursday, October 15th and they will learn portraiture to add their own portrait to their currency.  Stay tuned!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

5th Grade Self-Expressionists

Scholars are gluing their self-portrait profiles to their large white papers and will begin designing the final piece of their project.
The information your student has about designing lines can and should be applied to school presentations throughout their academic careers!  Encourage them to take their time when printing and writing.

Next Project Sneak Peak: 3D Wire Portraits.

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

ARTober 2015

5th Grade Artists

Sariani demonstrates she understands the concepts.
Scholars are continuing with their self-portrait profiles and they are looking SO good!  This is a layered piece of artwork so students are currently working on adding the 5 kinds of lines and 5 line variations to the backgrounds of their portraits.
FYI - Scholars can and should incorporate these line variations in school presentations. For example, when a cover page is needed for a book report, perhaps they can design the title page.  Teachers LOVE well-crafted and creative projects.

Questions about this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Designers

They are SHOWING US THE MONEY!  Scholars have started designing their currency and they are looking SO good!  This continues next week.

Questions about this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

Zaid nailed it!

7th Grade Sculptors - Howard

Paper sculptures were handed in on Thursday and it was amazing to see how students pushed themselves to think outside the box.  The criteria was set but it was up to them to add extra spice to their independently standing sculptures.

Questions about this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

8th Grade Graphic Novelists...of the Autobiographical nature!

Check your email!  Test on Monday on the powerpoint that was sent out.   Graphic novel work continues this week!

Questions about this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

FALL into Art

I can't resist a good pun.

8th Grade (Autobiographical) Graphic Novelists

Please have your ideas for your story plan completed by Monday.   Remember, they are ABOUT YOU...because they are autobiographical).  You should also work on character designs.  Include what your characters (remember, one of them is YOU) look like.  What are they wearing?  What is the season and place where everything takes place?  Look at the handouts I gave Monday to practice facial expressions.  You have so many options but think about if you are going to draw or photograph or use photo collage for this project.
Read this.
- Have a beginning, middle and ending ("To Be Continued" will be considered incomplete)

- At least 3 characters (you are one of them because it's AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL)
- Narrative boxes (a.k.a. captions)

- Thought bubbles
- Sound effects
- Dialogue
- A transition you were tested on (moment to moment etc...)
- 3 - 4 pages (one sided)
FINAL PIECE WILL HAVE ALL OF THE ABOVE and:
- Black or blue ink outlines and Color in the panels (color pencils work best for layering)
- Illustrated cover page in color.  Title and author must be clear (this will be the LAST thing you create).

Students who need to RE-TAKE the test will be doing so on Friday during lunchtime.
Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Paper Sculptors

Artwork by Richard Sweeney.
Homework: Sketch out at least three designs for the paper sculpture you will be creating.
Think about the Principals of Design and check this out to help.  CLICK HERE.
Criteria for the project:
- Create a paper sculpture that is a maximum of 8" high and 6" wide
- Attach 8 pieces of paper with only the supplies given (scissors, Elmer's Glue and paper)
- You must change the paper at least 8 different ways.
- Paper sculpture has to stand independently (NO base, but a strong foundation for your sculpture).

Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade Money Makers (designers...that is!)

Look at the criteria sheet given for the currency project.  Not sure what it is?  Here ya go:
You are designing currency (money) for your own country.  This is a checklist of what you must have for this project:
q  A monetary value.  What is the value of your money? ____
q  The name of the country you would run.  It should be an original name and not something that already exists.
q  At least two drawn symbols of what your country stands for (DRAWINGS, not words)
q  A motto (a saying or slogan)
q  Pattern
q  At least one border around the edge of the money
q  A portrait (this will only be done in class and should be done after Ms. Hillman teaches portraiture!)
q  Color!
q  The money design should be easy to read and should follow the Principles of Design (see worksheet)
q  All work should be clean and completed when submitted

Look at examples of beautiful currency from around the globe right here.
Questions?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

5th Grade Self-Portrait Artists

The 5 KINDS of lines are: vertical, diagonal, horizontal, zig zag and curved.
The 5 line VARIATIONS are: length, width, directional, texture and degree of curve.

Patterns of Line Variations!
This information is the key to a successful first art project.  Ask your scholar to demonstrate these for you as they are learning and mastering this aspect of art design.  WARNING!  Their writing will probably be more fancy after art class this quarter!

TUSKEGEE SCHOLARS NEED TO HAVE BETTER TRANSITIONS TO ART CLASS.  Time will not be wasted by practicing this in class but this Friday, transitions will be practiced during park time.  Please encourage your scholar to exhibit self-control when moving between classes. We are here to learn!

Storyboarding and sketching your graphic novel begins this week.  Come prepared for class to get full credit!

7th Grade Sculptors

The Characteristics of paper and whats to change paper continue when you create your paper sculptures this week.  What do you need for class?  Your supplies, your brain and ability to think out of the box!  You will be using the Principals of Design for this project so get ready to be super creative!

6th Grade Money Makers

Come to class with your sketches for your currency.  Use the checklist as a guide and sketch out your designs.  Sketchbooks are needed all of this week.

5th Grade Line Experts

Scholars in Tuskegee are becoming experts in the 5 kinds of lines (ask your scholar what they are!  Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, Zig-Zag and Curved) and will embark on creating their Portrait Profiles this week.  Worksheets "All about Me" grades are posted in Illuminate and scholars who did not finish them had a chance to make it up.  All are due Tuesday, however.

Questions about anything?  I can help but you have to email me:  jhillman@cpcsschool.org.
Enjoy your weekend!

Welcome to Art Class 2015

Paper-free Information with The Art Blog - ALL GRADES PLEASE READ

Welcome to art class with Ms. Hillman!  I am aiming to eliminate excess paper and the unnecessary writing down of homework assignments while allowing parents and students to get information on art class happenings.    I will only update this blog once a week and all you have to do is sign up for updates and read them to be as prepared as possible for class.  Each grade has its own section and only has to read that one unless I ask all grades to PLEASE READ...like this paragraph for example.  THE ART CLASS SYLLABUS IS HERE.

I am asking all grades to purchase a kneaded eraser.  They are under $1.00 at art supply stores like Artists & Craftsman, Dick Blick and Utrecht.  They last long, don't make a mess and are great for stress relief because kneading the rubber not only self-cleans but is good for people who fidget (like me!).  They are great for making mini-sculptures, but I have instructed all students that they should not allow them to distract them from school work.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS FOR THOSE TAKING ART THIS QUARTER ARE DUE THURSDAY.  Check previous Art Blog listings (on the left of this post) for specifics by grade.  Assignments will not be accepted after Thursday, September 17th.  This is a homework grade (worth 10%).

5th Grade - Tuskegee

Students have already started their first project about their identity as scholars and artists.  Their first Do Now was a questionnaire about their likes and hobbies and they had to choose 8 adjectives that describe them.  Grades will be posted on Illuminate Parent Portal soon.  ***My art class is deeply rooted in English, writing, vocabulary and critical thinking.  I correct grammar and expect students to put equal effort into completion of ALL assignments in ALL of their classes.
PROJECT ONE focuses on one of the Elements of Art: Line.  There are 5 kinds of lines, 5 line variations and together they will create expressive self-portraits that will include font design.  Stay tuned!

Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

6th Grade - Hampton

6th Grade will look at currency from other
countries to see similarities and
differences in design.
Scholars will be working on a mathematics / arts / design project regarding $$$$.  I call this project SHOW ME THE MONEY!  They are designing the currency of their own country.  Understanding of pattern, the 5 kinds of lines, 5 line variations, a motto, boarders in artwork and portraiture will help scholars complete their enlarged money.  Scholars will learn about the history of money design and creation too!

Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

Li Hongbo's paper sculpture goes
from realistic to
abstract REAL QUICK, REAL QUICK.
...REAL QUICK.

7th Grade - Howard University

Sculpture is the focus first project; FORM (One of the Elements of Art) is the 1st Unit.  We are going to be looking at the properties of different materials and how to manipulate them to get a desired look.  Expect to hear about explorations in various materials, such as paper, clay and plaster from your scholars.  I expect students to have an appreciation of abstract art after this series of projects.  It's going to be a great semester!
Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

8th Grade - Spelman

Not Autobiographical, but a great GN!
Autobiographical Graphic Novels are all about you and they are the first project for this year.  There is a strong connection to ELA this semester, with an emphasis on design.  You have to read "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud...specifically Chapters 1-4.  This was your summer assignment.  You have a quiz Monday, September 21st on the reading, vocabulary and understanding of the reading.
Questions? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.
