Art Class Wind Down

Artwork by Ozzie!

8th Grade - Spelman & Morehouse

As the end your Middle School career approaches, think about all you've accomplished!  Some scholars did not get a chance to complete the final art project, if you want to complete your artwork, DO THAT and send a photo of your finished piece to this email account:  jhillman@cpcsschool.org - I will give you credit for it and your grade will skyrocket.

Otherwise, see you soon and THANK YOU for the lovely card.

5th Grade - Tuskegee & Xavier

Will we complete the MONEY project?  If not this year, first thing next year because I want to guide you to success.  You will be learning SCRIPT (a.k.a. penmanship) and it's SO important to master!  In the meantime, enjoy your weekend and stay tuned for updates on this blog!

6th Grade - Hampton & FISK and 7th Grade - FAMU & Howard

Self-Portraits were difficult but the formula for facial features is very similar to mathematical formulas, so practice is best!  Use the notes and worksheets given in class and keep practicing!  IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY WITH YOUR GRADE FOR THE SELF-PORTRAIT, YOU SHOULD MAKE CORRECTIONS (OR DO OVER) AND EMAIL A PICTURE OF YOUR CORRECTED WORK tojhillman@cpcsschool.org.  IT WILL HELP YOUR GRADE A LOT for the 4th Quarter.
See you soon!

YEAH MAY!

It's here!  The seniors are looking forward to finishing up their art projects (and I guess those other subjects too) so they can move towards the graduation stage knowing that fulfilled all of their PORTFOLIO requirements with pride!

8th Grade - Spelman & Morehouse

Monday we will finish printing our patterned papers using the objects or patterns you created on the printmaking plate.  All of this is based on Kehinde Wiley's artwork, which can be seen until May 24th at the Brooklyn MuseumYOU SHOULD REALLY SEE THE SHOW IN PERSON...there's nothing like seeing artwork in real life!  Come to class ready to work on Monday!

If you missed the movie on Kehinde Wiley "An Economy of Grace", watch it here.  Do Overs for the Do Now are THIS MONDAY ONLY.

**Bring in or email 1-4  Baby Pictures for 1-4 Dojo Points (1 pt per photo) to jhillman@cpcsschool.org

5th Grade - Xavier & Tuskegee

Show and Tell in art class (Monday for Xavier and THURSDAY for Tuskegee) when you bring in an example of currency from another country.  Notes or Bills are preferable, but you earn Dojo points either way!    Show me the money!!! Project begins this week, but first...portraiture.  Vocabulary is due next class (test soon!).

7th Grade - Howard & FAMU

This doesn't look human, but it will!
Realistic portraiture is NO JOKE...  It's difficult but you are all up to the challenge.  This week, you will receive a packet to help you practice at home and in class.  Self-portraits go from there.  Take your time, read the directions, then follow them!  Sequence is important in this technique.

6th Grade Hampton & FISK

Jean-Michel Basquiat handouts are due Monday (for FISK) and THURSDAY (for Hampton).  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to the Brooklyn Museum to see his Notebook exhibit (and while you're there, you must see the Kehinde Wiley exhibit)!

April Showers bring ART Powers

8th Grade

Kehinde Wiley...I'm obsessed and you should be too.
Bring in a drawing or picture of an object that means something to you.  We have started looking at the artwork of Kehinde Wiley and his use of pattern in his portraiture.  GO SEE HIS EXHIBIT @ THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM, it closes May 24th so there is only one more month to see it in person.

**GET 5 DOJO POINTS when you bring in or email (jhillman@cpcsschool.org) your baby picture (this week only!).  Bye.

7th Grade

Proper proportions = realism
Human body and facial proportions continue this week.  You will learn how to draw realistically if you are paying attention...so pay attention.

**GET 5 DOJO POINTS when you email (jhillman@cpcsschool.org) the name of one artist who is famous for drawing people realistically AND the credit line for one of their pieces of artwork.

6th Grade

Basquiat Postcards
We complete our "Road Trip" Postcards this week.  If you can, go to the Brooklyn Museum to see the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat and his notebooks.  He made and sold postcards among many other amazing things!  You will be learning more about him this week as well.

**GET 4 DOJO POINTS if you can tell me Jean-Michel Basquiat's nationality.  Put it on a post-it!

5th Grade

SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!
The Autobiographical Comics were a success! The bulletin board in the 5th grade hallway will be where these live for a little while.  The amount of focus and hard work that went into these pieces truly is inspiring.  I'm so proud of my scholars!

**GET 4 DOJO POINTS if you bring in money (dollar notes) from another country to show during art class this week.  It will be returned!!!!

Welcome to Quarter 4 Art Class 2015

Here's what's happening in your upcoming art classes:

5th Grade Xavier & Tuskegee

Artwork by Philip McAndrew
We complete our Autobiographical Comics in the next couple classes.  This is the first grade for the 4th quarter!  We will have a publishing party when everything is complete.  We will primarily be working with colored pencils and markers to make our comics POP!
Please, ask your scholar about the progress of their autobiographical comic ...you might have made an appearance in their story!

Questions about any of this? Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

8th Grade Spelman & Morehouse

"Shantavia Beale" by Kehinde Wiley
Spelman artists will have a class critique in the next class and then will venture into the next project based on the work of artist Kehinde Wiley, who currently has an amazing and WONDERFUL show at the Brooklyn Museum called A New Republic.   Wiley uses famous old portraits to redefine portraiture in the African American community using pattern and fashion.  This project we are doing is inspired by his work.

7th Grade FAMU & Howard

Micrography work should be completed by now and we will critique those.  Then...we delve into the next project.
It's all about you.
Intrigued?  You should be.
Bring a THESAURUS to art class and receive 4 DOJO points because you are prepared for class in our next project.  You will be expected to come up with 25 words that describe you and your personality for the first half of class.  You will be creating a type of self portrait based on several artists you will become very familiar with.

6th Grade FISK & Hampton Artists

Have a THESAURUS for art class (You will get 4 dojo points for doing so)!  Next project is a culmination of what we have been doing in  class for the past couple months.  You will need to bring your creativity and understanding of the PARTS OF ARTWORK (foreground, middle ground and background).

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.  See you soon!
