8th Grade

Graphic Novels were DUE last week.  Everyday they are late, 5 points are deducted.  This week we will complete by adding color and finishing preparation for publishing.  There are some SPELMAN AND MOREHOUSE SCHOLARS who owe me your graphic novels still and some sort of proof that you are working on them.

Social Action Poster Project Response Essay

Cover all of these points in your essay:

q  What is your connection to the issue in your poster?  What about the issue inspired you?

q  What does this art mean? Why did you choose certain elements of your poster (why did you choose to draw/collage/paint your poster)?

q  How does your poster convey the message you are trying to send?  BE SPECIFIC and give examples.

q  What did you enjoy about the project?  What would you change about the project? 

Formats you can use:

Free-form essay                                 

Persuasion piece (argumentative essay like a letter to the Mayor or opponents to the issue)

PAINTING LICENSES ARE COMING.  

6th Grade

We complete painting the background of your license plates this week!  

YOU MUST HAVE THEM TO PAINT THEM!  COME PREPARED OR YOUR GRADE SUFFERS AND YOU FALL BEHIND...DON'T BE THAT PERSON!  Foreground objects with ALL criteria (see previous posts) will be completed this week as well.  KEEP STUDYING THE STATES...QUIZZES CONTINUE!

5th Grade

Xavier Calder Video questions (from the last post) homework DUE MONDAY.

Tuskegee - HAND IN YOUR CONTOUR LINE SELF PORTRAITS TUESDAY.  They are going up with your sculptures and we need them!

We begin our new project this week.  Think Comics!  Think Stories!  Think about something that happened in your life that you want to share through a comic!

Personalized License Plate Designers - 6th Graders

Use the example as a guide, but PLEASE make the work your own.  Be creative!

Everyone has the 'good' paper now and the sketched designs in pencil only are DUE FOR BOTH FISK AND HAMPTON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd.  Here's the criteria/rubric for your 3 license plates:

• State name
• State name
• Personalization - 5-7 letters/numbers/characters that are easy to read (large) and have different line variations to make it POP!
• two drawings of tourist attractions in the state.  What would you want to do if you visited that state?  DRAW IT...no words...just DRAWINGS of the things you're interested in seeing/doing there.
• DO NOT ADD COLOR...we are going to use watercolor to work on the background together in class.

DOJO Challenge:  On a post-it note with your name, write a sentence about what your personalized license plate word means to you...get three Dojo Points.

8th Grade Cover Artists

Hello!  Hope you are enjoying the break and staying warm.  Here's what's happening:  Graphic Novels will not be accepted after Monday, February 23rd.  The covers are due at the beginning of class on Monday, February 23rd for Spelman and Tuesday for Morehouse.  

The criteria:

SKIP NUMBER 4, BUT THINK ABOUT IT and how you want it to look in the end.  DO NOT ADD COLOR...we are going to do that in class when we return from this glorious break!

DOJO CHALLENGE:  Give the title of a graphic novel that has really influenced you as a person and a detailed sentence explaining why.  Answer on a post-it note with your name on Monday, February 23rd and receive 3 Dojo points.

7th Grade Social Action Countdown

My pride in the work FAMU & Howard have done for this project is immeasurable thus far.  That being said, you will have one more class day to complete the project.  In the meantime, make sure you get ALL imagery/text/photos ready to go for this week.  If you need something printed, email it to me ASAP and I will get it to you in time: jhillman@cpcsschool.org

DOJO CHALLENGE:  On a post-it note, give the name of one of your heroes and why.  Answer in full sentences and be clear in your wording.  Due when you first see me and receive 3 Dojo points.

5th Grade Wire Sculptors

We have completed the self-portrait sculptures!  The work looks amazing.  

Here is your lifework (a.k.a. homework) over the break.  Watch this 4 minute video on Alexander Calder's :

Answer the following questions, using FULL sentences.  This is due Monday, February 23rd (Xavier) and Tuesday, February 24th (Tuskegee):

On Loose leaf paper, put your name on the upper left hand-hand-side.  Date and the class you are in on the upper right side.

1. What language is Alexander Calder speaking when he announces his circus?

2. Alexander traveled from Paris, France to ______________ in the United States.

3. Why did he have to stop taking his miniature circus with him in his travels?

4. Alexander Calder was an artist who made toys and worked on a traveling circus of toys.  Name the animal you see different versions of in this video.

5. Calder performed his life circus in front of audiences.  The great thing about his toys and sculptures were the fact that they moved.  What kind of sculpture moves?  (hint: it is also a term used in Science to describe a kind of energy).

5th Grade Sculptors

Self-Portrait wire sculptures will be completed this week and the drawn contour line portraits are DUE Monday (Xavier) and Tuesday (Tuskegee).  The sculptures have started to be hung in our CPCS hallways and they look amazing!

6th Grade U.S. Travelers

License plates will be due this week.  We will work hard to complete all three personalized designs.  The watercolor challenge last week is all going to come together.  There will not be any vocabulary tests this week so the License plates will be completed before the Winter Holiday Break.

7th Grade Social Activists

Social action posters will be due by the end of class on Friday.  Things to keep in mind for this project:  Must have text and images (drawn, collaged, photographs), work from background to middle ground, to foreground.  It's important to design the text so it is easy to read & the font matches the theme.

8th Grade Graphic Novelists

Spelman: Graphic Novel Covers continue.  We will add color this week to the novels and the covers IN class.  Morehouse, Graphic Novels are due at the top of class on Tuesday.  Be on time because every day it is late, 5 points are deducted.  Vocabulary for this week:

MORE 8th Grade Info about Class Dojo

Class Dojo weekly goal runs from Mondays through Fridays (end of day).  Those who earn incentives will be informed the following Monday.  15 points per week will keep 8th graders on track for Senior activities (the dance, the activities involved with all things "Senior".  16-20 points are awarded a dress down pass for the following week (Passes will be given).  Scholars who earn 21-25 points earn a chaperoned bodega lunch and a dress down pass for a day of your choice.  Scholars who earn 30+ points will earn a pizza party, dress down and other prizes TBA (to be announced).

The work is coming along nicely and those who signed up to paint will need to first earn their painting licenses, which will happen during Lunch/Park time on Wednesday.  Study the steps on how to clean your brushes and you will be all set to paint your posters later this week.

Quarter 3 Art

6th Grade Personal License Plate/Geography Project - FISK & Hampton

All three drafts for the license plate project were due last Thursday.  This week we will strictly be working on final pieces for the three states chosen.  Make sure you have your materials in class and start the third quarter prepared!

7th Grade Social Action Poster Project - FAMU & Howard

Posters bring awareness.  What's your issue?

Continue to bring in your resource material for the social action posters.   Have your thumbnail sketches and ideas in class.  Remember, this project is also going to count as an ELA grade in Quarter 3.

5th Grade Sculptors - Tuskegee and Xavier

Scholars will complete their self-portrait sculptures based on Alexander Calder and continue with vocabulary quizzes this week.

8th Grade Graphic Novel Projects

The completed Graphic Novel Project will be due Monday, February 2nd.  Criteria for the project will be reiterated in class.  Here is the checklist:

• Story will have a beginning, middle and end
• Story must make sense
• Include ALL of the following: Dialogue boxes, at least 3 narrative boxes, panels
• At least 3 characters
• Between 3-4 pages (not including a cover page)
• Cover page (not due February 2nd)

This license plate is TOO BORING…it needs the 6th Graders

STUDY FOR THE STATES QUIZZES…YOU MUST KNOW THE STATES.  Use the online quizzes in earlier posts in this blog for help.

License plates project criteria must have:

- Line variations in your text design (length, width, texture, degree of curve, directional)

- between 5-7 letters/numbers/characters

- the name of the state somewhere on the license plate

- two drawings that are related to things to do in that state (you have done the research in class or at home over the break!)

- The real state motto (you must look that up)

AFTER WE DESIGN THE PLATES, WE ARE GOING TO DESIGN OUR ITINERARY as if we are planning visits to the best attractions in these states!  Questions? Email jhillman@cpcpsschool.org

The Children's March Documentary

The video on The Children's March and the article on Emory Douglas was meant to inspire you to think deeply about the visual aspects of your Social Action Poster.  It must have text and imagery that matches theme of the issue you are working on.  The posters resume this week but HAVE YOUR IDEAS and don't fall behind with what you are expected to have for class.

8th Graders

Bring your ideas for your graphic novel this week.  You must have a story to tell, so bring yours this week.  We are getting the ideas together and working on panels, using the drawing techniques we have been working with.

New Year - New Art!

Happy 2015!
A lot is going on!  VOCABULARY WILL CONTINUE IN 2015 and it will always be cumulative, so refer back to your notes regularly!

7th Grade:   

Have your thumbnail sketches for your Social Action Project for our next class.  Push yourself because generic 'issues' won't cut it.  You have to care about the issue you are choosing.  WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH YOU?  If the answer is 'not much' then you need to dig deeper.

8th Grade:

Study your notes from the Power Point you saw before break about Graphic Novels.  You will be tested on this in the next 2 weeks.  Also, bring in an example of the TYPE of graphic novel you are interested in creating. Have you though of characters?  Where is the setting?  Will there be a narrator?  We will get into this during class, but start thinking seriously about your, ORIGINAL novel you will be working on.

6th Grade:

Continue reviewing the East Coast and Mid-western states…you MUST know them.  The Western states will be next.  TEST YOURSELF with this online quiz!

Be ready to show and share your images from the research we have done on the states you will be planning your trips to.  You should have graphic organizer-style notes on each state with attractions YOU ARE INTERESTED IN VISITING with photos/pictures/drawings to match.

5th Grade:

Choose 3 items in your life and draw contour line drawings of each of them.  Check your POINT OF VIEW (the position you are observing from) and ask yourself "Is this interesting to look at?"  How can you change your point of view to make your COMPOSITION (the layout or design of your page) more interesting?   Remember, you have to look at your subject and your paper constantly and get the INNER and OUTER edges (lines!) of your objects.  Get to work and have this for next week's classes!

DOJO EXTRA…If you have an artistic-style New Year's Resolution that you would like to share, write it out on a Post-It note and give it to Ms. Hillman on Tuesday, January 6th.  Put your name on it!  See you Tuesday!
