ALL GRADES - PLEASE READ THIS 

Welcome to art class in 2016!  Each grade is set to make A LOT of artwork and I'm very excited about the things you will learn.  After reading this section, go your your grade and find out specifics.  I ENCOURAGE YOUR PARENTS TO ALSO SIGN UP FOR THIS BLOG, which is updated once a week.  I will be showing off my students' artwork, so it's important to share with everyone you know!

What you need to be successful in Art Class:
A box of #2 pencils or art pencil
A HAND-HELD SHARPENER (good quality sharpeners!)
A kneaded eraser
Something to draw on (sketchbook or paper)
Sharpie Markers (one fine point and one bold point)
An Art Folder or a folder you will always have on hand.
A pencil case to put this stuff in!  Decorate it!

5th Grade Xavier

Xavier artists are starting the quarter with a project on symmetry while learning about the 5 kinds of lines and 5 line variations.

Symmetry, asymmetry, line of symmetry and their role in science and art is the focus of this project. Photos of artwork coming very soon!

6th Grade FISK

FISK scholars are taking POP ART to a new level!  Inspired by what Hampton artists created with their self portraits, FISK is going to explore one of many links that art has to ELA through portraiture.  

Notice the use of ONOMATOPEE in his work, especially his comic book enlargements.

This project is going to ROCK YOUR SOCKS.  Stay tuned!

7th Grade FAMU Artists

We begin this quarter with a little inspiration from the world of current events, specifically social action and issues that affect our lives.  Scholars watched a video and inevitably made assumptions about the young man in it.  HOMEWORK:  Think about what social action issues you are interested in...what do you care about?  Here are some ideas:

Environmental issues, racial equality, stereotyping, bullying, hate crimes

We will talk / brainstorm about this more in class.  

The project: Social Action Poster with text (words) designed by you!   Think about the social issue in TEXT and PICTURES.

8th Grade Morehouse Artists

Weaving has begun.  We are working on UNDERSTANDING IMPERIAL MEASUREMENT and being able to properly measure to create the loom.  More soon!

Snow Dump

Because it's really SNOWING!

We are coming to the close of ART CLASS for ALL OF YOU.  Quarter 3 begins January 27th and Music and Art classes switch.

5th Grade

Symmetrical name project will be the last of the year.  Come prepared to class with a pencil, kneaded eraser and a fine point black sharpie.

8th Grade

Artists will be reflecting on the batiks they created and class critique will give scholars a chance to give positive feedback to classmates.

7th Grade

Mondrian artwork should be completed by now and we will have a class critique next week.

6th Grade Pop Artists

Completed Pop Artwork based on the work of Roy Lichtenstein is looking AMAZING!  Check out these examples!

Hello!
The ELA and Math Rally tests are going to mess with all of our schedules for the next couple of weeks, so patience is key.

THIS WEEK:

5th Grade

Symmetry artwork with your name continues.  Follow directions and you will be happy with the outcome of your work!

6th Grade

Pop Art inspired by Roy Lichtenstein will be completed this week.  They look SO great!

7th Grade

Mondrian artwork is completed.  Next week, artist research assessment on the artists Howard Students presented to the class.

8th Grade

Sewing class critique and reflection.  GET THOSE DOJO POINTS!

January Art-attack

Welcome back to school and to a new year... now it's time to get to work!

The 2nd Quarter finishes on the 26th of January, 2016 and all students who have art class now will switch to music class with Mr. McGregor.  That means you only have a couple of weeks left to get your best artwork (and grades in art) done!

Here's what's going on:

Getting that WHIP STITCH on.

8th Grade Batik Artists

My Spelman artists have been sewing the four edges of their batiks to clean up the edges of their work, which takes a lot of time and patience.  High quality craftsmanship is what we are going for with the whip stitch method (click HERE for a quick tutorial) around the dowels and the sides.

Later, at the end of the quarter, there will be a cumulative test from vocabulary, technique and information taught in class at the end of Quarter 2.  Stay tuned for the date and study guides (given in class).

5th Grade

Wire self-portrait sculptures go up this week along with the portraits they made.  A painting project dealing with symmetry and asymmetry is next on the docket.  Scholars have been completing packets  to show their understanding of symmetry and, so far, the grades have been phenomenal!  Keep up the 

great work!

7th Grade Abstract Artists

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch artist who was an innovator of abstract art.  Scholars looked at "Victory Boogie Woogie" and interpreted what the artist was thinking and what he could have been inspired by when making the piece.  Howard students are using the principles of design to create an attractive piece of artwork based on Mondrian's abstract style. 

Scholars who presented for the Artist Research Project were to email their presentations to Ms. Hillman (jhillman@cpcsschool.org).  Study guides will be created based on the presentations and be included in the final, cumulative test at the end of Quarter 2.

6th Grade Pop Artists

That guy...Roy Lichtenstein, is one of Pop Art's founders.  He took comic strips found in newspapers and recreated individual frames and painted them large.  Scholars are about to complete a project where they are re-created photographed self-portraits in Lichtenstein-style.  

Hampton scholars are KILLING this project and they look amazing.  The sequence of the project is important and students will have to recall the order of the techniques at some point soon (hint hint...QUIZ COMING!).

This multi-step project is going well and scholars are using watercolor to make their pop art projects pop!
