New Year - New Art!

Happy 2015!
A lot is going on!  VOCABULARY WILL CONTINUE IN 2015 and it will always be cumulative, so refer back to your notes regularly!

7th Grade:

Have your thumbnail sketches for your Social Action Project for our next class.  Push yourself because generic 'issues' won't cut it.  You have to care about the issue you are choosing.  WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH YOU?  If the answer is 'not much' then you need to dig deeper.

"Peanuts" by Charles Schultz

8th Grade:

Study your notes from the Power Point you saw before break about Graphic Novels.  You will be tested on this in the next 2 weeks.  Also, bring in an example of the TYPE of graphic novel you are interested in creating. Have you though of characters?  Where is the setting?  Will there be a narrator?  We will get into this during class, but start thinking seriously about your, ORIGINAL novel you will be working on.

6th Grade:

Continue reviewing the East Coast and Mid-western states…you MUST know them.  The Western states will be next.  TEST YOURSELF with this online quiz!
Be ready to show and share your images from the research we have done on the states you will be planning your trips to.  You should have graphic organizer-style notes on each state with attractions YOU ARE INTERESTED IN VISITING with photos/pictures/drawings to match.

5th Grade:

Choose 3 items in your life and draw contour line drawings of each of them.  Check your POINT OF VIEW (the position you are observing from) and ask yourself "Is this interesting to look at?"  How can you change your point of view to make your COMPOSITION (the layout or design of your page) more interesting?   Remember, you have to look at your subject and your paper constantly and get the INNER and OUTER edges (lines!) of your objects.  Get to work and have this for next week's classes!

DOJO EXTRA…If you have an artistic-style New Year's Resolution that you would like to share, write it out on a Post-It note and give it to Ms. Hillman on Tuesday, January 6th.  Put your name on it!  See you Tuesday!

Get Artsy Over the Holiday Break

Any questions about the information below, please email: jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

7th Grade Social Action Visual Art Project

You asked to be first and you are receiving.  The Social Action Poster Project is going to be a big deal. So big that you need to start creating your thumbnail sketches for your design ideas.  What is the social issue you are interested in exploring?  What text will you include?  How will you make the text 'match' the theme of your issue?  What imagery will you use - collage? photography? drawing?  So many options…and the ENTIRE HOLIDAY BREAK to think it over!  Come prepared with 3 thumbnails and ideas for the layout of your poster.

Look at artwork that inspires you to come up with your own ideas.  Barbara Kruger's work (on the left) "Your Body Is A Battleground" is a photographer who uses text and color in her artwork.  Sheperd Fairey used his experience with street art posters to make powerful posters supporting Barack Obama when he ran for President.

8th Grade Graphic Novels

Morehouse & Spelman will earn their painting licenses into the New Year.  This is going to be useful for future art projects and could play a part in the upcoming Graphic Novel project.  Starting with the basics of drawing realistically, scholars learned about gesture drawing, contour line drawing and even dabbled in blind contour line drawings.  Then we moved onto contour line painting on a larger scale (enter the realm of the Painting Licenses), which will be gracing our hallways very soon.  Graphic novels and planning to add visuals to a narrative is going to be tricky, but we can and will do it!

5th Grade Sculptors

As we study the work of artist and toy-maker Alexander Calder, we are drawing from life from the best models ever…ourselves!  There will be a homework assignment over the break in which scholars will view a video Calder made of his 'circus'.  Stay tuned for updates coming soon.
Calder artwork.

6th Grade Designers

We have broken out the computers to start adding to our knowledge of the United States - not only facts about the states but attractions found in these states.  The classwork must be completed and homework must be completed well and on time.  We are designing our 'trip' to each state and will soon be designing so much more...

Modified Art Schedule - Dec 15-19

Regularly scheduled art classes will be on Monday and Friday, but Tuesday - Thursday will be very different due to the testing schedule.  ONLY 5th and 6th Grade classes will have ART Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.

One of my favorite portraits from last year.
Katrell TRULY was looking!

5th Grade

Scholars who did not pass the Alexander Calder worksheet last week have until Monday, December 15th to make corrections and improve upon that grade.
This week, scholars will be looking closely at themselves and the artwork of Alexander Calder, who made line sculpture portraits.  No quizzes this week!

6th Grade

Geography in art class…yes!  Art classes nearly every day this week for Hampton & FISK provides us with a lot of opportunity to dive into researching the monuments, history and overall awesomeness of our respective states chosen for the design project.  You have to study the Northeast, Southern and Midwestern states because we MUST know where every state is located for this next project.  Click here for a preview of what we will be doing:  MAP QUIZ US STATES.  No vocabulary quizzes this week but if you had corrections to make on any of last week's assessments, it is due by Wednesday.  Missing work becomes a zero in grade book, so get that work to me!

7th Grade FAMU & Howard

7th Grade will only have art class on Friday, but I want you to come prepared for class with at least three different ideas for your social action project.  This means:  come with at least three social issues you are passionate about.  Have at least 5 facts about those issues (for example, if you are choosing gay rights as one of the issues, you could have statistical information about how a new bill in Michigan would let doctors and EMTs refuse to treat gay patients.  What would the VISUAL for that look like?  You will need your sketchbook and this homework assignment on Friday.
In the meantime, listen to this current SOCIAL ACTION SONG for inspiration.  If you can tell me the name of the song and artist, you will earn 3 Dojo points from me (Ms. Hillman).  No vocabulary quizzes this week.

8th Grade Spelman & Morehouse

Because of the testing schedule this week, only Spelman will have art class on Monday.  Come prepared:  study to PASS the painting license test, group contour line paintings continue.  BOTH 8th grade classes will have a minor homework packet to complete over the holiday break that has to do with our next big project: Graphic Novels.  No vocabulary quizzes this week but corrections are due  and any missing work is due by Wednesday or it becomes a zero…you don't have class with me, but it's still due.  Find me in between classes or at lunch time.

Art Update December 8 - 12th

8th Grade INFO & Art Classes

**Scholars who met the Class Dojo incentive by the end of day on Friday, December 5th will receive their passes on Monday.  Dress Down Passes must be approved by an 8th grade teacher the day PRIOR to when you want to use the pass (because certain days cannot be dress down).  Hang on to the passes…new ones will not be reissued!**

And now for ART CLASS INFO:
Scholars are learning drawing basics:  Contours, gestures and blind contour drawings.  It's difficult but it is vital that they stick with pushing through when things get difficult.  The culmination of these mini-lessons are heading towards a larger project involving designing a graphic novel, which will continue in their ELA classes with Mrs. Andrade.

7th Grade Collage Project - The Last Part

The "Challenge I Overcame" collage was completed this past week.  The finishing touch is to write a one and a half page (1.5 page ...minimum) paper about the challenge that is the subject of the artwork.  I PREFER ALL PAPERS TYPED, DOUBLE-SPACED, TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT SIZE 12.  If that is not possible, the written work must be legible, be WRITTEN IN PARAGRAPHS WITH PROPER GRAMMAR.
Touch on the following aspects in your writing:
- Give credit line information about your artwork:
"Title"
Artist Name, Year
Materials used
- What the challenge was that you used in your artwork.
- What made you choose this particular challenge for your art class?
- Explain what is happening in your artwork and use vocabulary words - (describe it as if you are explaining it to someone who cannot see your artwork)
- What would you do differently if you had to do this project again?  Why?
- What was the challenge in making your artwork?  What do you feel was successful?

6th Grade Geography/Art Class!

Scholars are learning about the US States for their next project, which is a design project that will incorporate what they have learned about the states AND The Line variations!
Students must make corrections on their tests and return to me ASAP for an improved grade.
Vocabulary for this week:
Know the States and their Capitals in the Mid-west and how to spell them correctly.

5th Grade Artists

Alexander Calder created kinetic artwork using wire and line.  Our scholars are going to know the ins and outs of this artist and how to use line in a 3-dimensional way!  The worksheet on Calder is due Monday (Xavier) and Tuesday for Tuskegee.

Pre-Thanksgiving Art Classes

Only TWO Days of School This Week?

You are NOT dreaming…it's true, but there is still work to be done and here is the breakdown:

5th Grade

Xavier and Tuskegee Scholars get ready for Vocabulary.  Quizzes are coming your way.  We will go over the expectations in our classes this week so you can be articulate students.  Don't know what "articulate" means…go get your dictionary RIGHT NOW!  You are going to need it for the rest of your art education with Ms. Hillman.

6th Grade Pop Artists

Diversity Day happens on December 5th and the mounted, completed artwork we worked on during Quarter 1 will be unveiled.  Join us!
In the meantime, we are learning about the states in America.  WHY are we learning about that in ART CLASS?  Well, aside from the fact that Art spans ALL subjects, we are working on a long term, deeply involved project that will deal with design techniques and geography!  That's why.  Start studying up on your states and capitals.

Let's ALL get to know this map.

7th Grade will not have Art Classes this week.

Don't cry, CPCMS Collage artists!  Next week we are completing the collage project and moving on serious vocabulary and a new project!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Seniors

Kevin B. killed this project.   Great work!

Morehouse & Spelman scholars listen up!  Bring your sketchbooks to class from now on!  You are SUPPOSED to have them, so bring them to class.  Prepared scholars will earn DOJO POINTS that you will be able to use as bidding $ on the auction.

Independent Weaving projects with untraditional/unorthodox materials was due last Wednesday.  Every day it is late decreases your point value.

Morehouse you have your vocabulary quiz on Tuesday. STUDY.  Let me grade them during independent work and while you hone your gesture drawing skills and get your AMAZING Grades before you leave for the very long weekend!

Questions about any of this?  Email Ms. Hillman @ jhillman@cpcsschool.org.

VOCAB VOCAB VOCAB!

Art Class + Grammar = A Well-rounded & Successful Life

Well, that statement is MORE RIGHT than WRONG, so let's get started!  Weekly vocabulary tests are coming to CPCMS in the second quarter.   Parts of speech, proper usage and understanding of terms (art-related words and non-art-related!!!!) leads to deeper understanding across all content areas.

As we ease into this new realm of arts and assessment, take your time, but meet deadlines.  Late work will not be accepted. Use a dictionary or online sources like artlex.com to locate the definitions.

THIS IS WHAT SCHOLARS WILL HAVE TO HAND IN:

Write out the vocabulary word - (part of speech in parenthesis) 1. Definition.  If there is more than one, scholar should write out the definition that is art-related.
Write out the vocabulary word in a sentence and it must be in proper context. (Do not write a sentence like this: "One of the words I had to write a sentence about is 'contour line drawing.").

skip a line

Here is a real-life example, 8th graders, you're welcome:
Warp (noun) - In weaving, the vertical threads attached to the top and bottom of a loom, through which the weft is woven.
I had a difficult time with the first weaving project because the yarn kept coming out of the loom, but after securing the warp with tape, it worked out fine.

ART ALERT!

8th Grade Fiber Artists Get Center Stage
8th Grade Weaving Project…so far!

That's right!  The 8th graders spent most of the 1st quarter working on a fiber arts project learning how to weave.  The bulletin board outside of the S.T.E.A.M. room is showcasing the work RIGHT NOW.  But don't take my word for it…come and see for yourself!

Scholars are also working on an independent project that is due NOVEMBER 19th, which will be the first graded project for the second quarter.  Students will create a loom and use at least 9 unorthodox/untraditional materials to create a new weaving project.  Check up on them…ask them what materials they are using and encourage them to make the deadline!

FAMU & Howard

Scholars are diligently working on their paper collage projects about a challenge they overcame.  The criteria is simple but the process is not.  Students must think about how they want to render this event (no matter how big or small it may seem) by thinking in shapes and then adding each and every detail to their work using ONLY paper, glue and scissors.  They must include themselves in this visual in some way.  7th Graders are progressing very well in this project and have been working with the properties of paper during the entirety of the first quarter.  Ask your scholar about their challenge and the process for creating their collage.

POP ARTists Have Taken Over 6th Grade

It's true.  No longer do we have regular scholars…each one of them are practically Pop Art experts.  Not only can they tell you about the Pop Art movement, but they have created their own Pop Art Self-Portraits.  Andy Warhol would be proud!  The work is going up this week and when we are done showing off the portraits @ CPCS, they are ready to be hung on the walls at home.

Xavier & Tuskegee Line Experts In the (CPCS) House

When you hear "Line Experts" you probably didn't realize there was such a thing.  If you know a 5th grader, however, you are in the company of greatness.  There are 5 kinds of lines and 5 line variations and 5th grade scholars have been working with these lines for ALL of the first quarter.  The hallways are filled with proof of their knowledge.  Come see for yourself on November 19th.

8th Grades Take Manhattan

High Line!

We just came back from the High Line and had a great day.  The scholars are TIRED, but a good kind of tired, because they saw a lot of public art and was welcomed into a gallery that we did not expect to visit, Coates & Scarry Gallery on 14th Street (http://www.coatesandscarry.com).

QUESTION #10 from the Field Lab Scavenger Hunt Paper needs to be completed:

10) Describe in detail two of your favorite pieces in your writing journal.  You are required to write two entries (one page each) about your favorite artwork pieces you viewed today.  Include sensory details.

Adios, October! November is the Art Jam!

8th Graders are GOING PLACES

This week the 8th Graders are going to be exploring the High Line and surrounding Art Galleries.  This is in an effort to give them the experience of viewing public art in the beautiful Chelsea area of Manhattan AND in professional gallery settings.

The Weaving Project was a wild success as scholars eventually got the hang of how to make the looms and create their own pieces of woven artwork.  And you ain't seen NOTHING yet...the Pre-Holiday project will build on their knowledge of weaving and scholars will be creating another piece with non-traditional materials. We start this week!
8th Graders really DID get Weavey with it.
BOOK CHARACTER DAY IS A GREAT WAY TO SHOW OFF YOUR CREATIVITY AND ARTISTIC SKILLS.  JOIN OUR PARTY ON FRIDAY!

7th Grade Update on Howard & FAMU

Next project will continue with exploration of paper as a material, this time: COLLAGE.  Students are exploring a challenge they have had to overcome and began working on their collages last week.

6th Grade POP ARTISTS

We are nearing the end of the Pop Art Self-Portrait project...kinda, sorta.  It's time to mount the artwork so it is ready for gallery showing...ask your scholar about the sequences of this project.  Recalling the process is important for their growth as scholars and artists.
Alexis' artwork is TRULY something Andy Warhol would enjoy!

Grade 5 Artists

Being thorough in art class is vital.  Scholars in Xavier and Tuskegee are finishing up their Self-Portrait Profiles and are ready to show off their skills in the VERY, VERY, VERY near future.  The five line variations are going to be our next victims as we master the design skills needed to be able to present ANYTHING in a fancy sort of way.  If you don't know what I mean, you will soon!

Mid-October Art Fest!

Morehouse & Spelman

Weaving projects are due Monday (Spelman) and Tuesday (Morehouse). This project requires a lot of patience and understanding of pattern.  The finished projects will be perfect to hang on walls (after we show them off at school first!).
Look at the "8th Grade Gets Weavey" post for links on how to complete the steps for this project BUT keep your yarn ON the loom.

7th Grader Artists

Abraham got his Bee on!
We been working with paper and creating sculptures of Fierce Animals.  The latest project has been focusing on paper as a material and what is possible when you change it.  Scholars completed their Fierce Animals, chock full of details about what makes their animal fierce to them!

Scholars had one week to create their independently standing sculptures.

Terry created a fierce looking spider...just in time for Halloween!

6th Graders in FISK & Hampton

Our young Pop Artists are nearly done their Pop Art self-portraits in clay.  They are now putting on the finishing touches and learning how to hang and display their art in a professional manner.

Xavier & Tuskegee

The five line variations are the focus of this week's lesson.  Scholars are mastering their skills and putting in their personal touches on their profile collages.  Practice makes perfect and our in-house designers are going to have their artwork dazzling our hallways in the very near future.

October Art Fest!

This week in Art Class - October Art!

I HOPE TO MEET FAMILIES AT CURRICULUM NIGHT THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8.

5th Graders

This week you will need your "ALL ABOUT ME" worksheets you filled out in September.
Xavier and Tuskegee artists continue on their profile portraits and are finishing up the areas outside of their portraits.  QUIZ your scholar what the 5 KINDS of lines are AND the 5 Line Variations...they know them!

The FIVE KINDS OF LINES ARE:
  • Vertical
  • Horizontal
  • Diagonal
  • Zig Zag
  • Curved
The FIVE LINE VARIATIONS ARE:
  • Length
  • Width
  • Texture
  • Directional
  • Degree of Curve
You will see A LOT of these lines in the artwork they are currently making as well as in a mini project we are going to start this week about DESIGNING using the lines above.

6th Grade

We are DEEP into our Pop Art project.  This week, the scholars in FISK & Hampton have put their primer down on the red clay and are ready to start painting their portraits in the style of Pop Artist, Andy Warhol.  If you aren't sure about who Mr. Warhol is, please, ask your scholar...they have been learning about him, his life and the contributions he made as one of the founders of the  Pop Art movement.  Photos are coming very soon, so stay tuned!

7th Grade Artwork this week

FAMU & Howard are completing their first attempt at paper sculpture building.  They had to create a structure that would stand independently using various ways to change the paper.  The ONLY supplies they had at their disposal were: paper, scissors, glue and their knowledge of the attributes of paper.

Art Criticism is a major part of the curriculum and scholars are going to be writing about artwork on a regular basis.  You will see some of their thoughts about "The Gulf Stream" by Winslow Homer on the bulletin board outside of Rm. 322 during CURRICULUM NIGHT on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8th.

8th Grade Morehouse & Spelman

Wednesday is the "Understanding Comics" RE-TEST.  Scholars may not take the test unless permission slips are signed.  Weaving continues as well.  Design decisions are being made and concentration is a must when weaving.  Ask your scholar about HOW they made their looms!

As always, if you have any questions, please email: jhillman@cpcsschool.orgjhillman@cpsccshool.org.  Enjoy your week!

8th Grade Art Test SECOND CHANCE

Scholars have the opportunity to CHOOSE.  They can choose to retake the test on "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud, Chapters 1-4 (assigned over the summer), OR they can choose not to retake the test and keep their original score.

Either way, parents and scholars might sign the permission forms sent home (Morehouse received theirs today (Thursday) and Spelman is receiving them tomorrow (Friday, October 3rd).

Deep into the First Quarter

Profile Portraits are in Full Effect for 5th Graders

Scholars from Xavier and Tuskegee are working SO hard to master the art of the Line.  Seems silly, right?  But everything around us is made from lines (from our signatures to our comfy couch...everything started from lines).

Students have been working on this multi-layered project since the beginning of school.  Some of the vocabulary we are using regularly include:

                                         Self-Portrait
Is this YOUR scholar?
ProfileSilhouette
The 5 Kinds of Lines:
  Vertical
  Diagonal
  Horizontal
  Zig Zag
  Curved
The 5 Line Variations:
  Width
  Length
  Texture
                                           Degree of Curve
                                           Directional

ASK YOUR SCHOLARS WHAT THESE WORDS MEAN!!!!!

6th Graders - FISK & Hampton

POP ART has a lot of crazy, fun colors!
POP ART IS HERE!  Students have been learning about the life of Andy Warhol, one of the American founders of Pop Art.  Scholars are working on a self-portrait in the style of Warhol but in CLAY FORMATION!  We have been exploring the characteristics/properties of clay (it's moist, holds form, is in the same dimension as we are - 3D!) and are transferring their work onto slabs of clay.  Later they will use their PAINTING LICENSE to be the first grade of this year to paint.  They have the know how, now they will put it to use.

7th Grade - Writing About Art & The Paper Sculpture Project

Students in FAMU & Howard are embarking on an ELA-based skill dealing with writing about artwork.  Art criticism is deeply rooted in descriptive writing as well, so students are practicing noticing and writing about FACTS when they look at Artwork and the credit lines that often accompany art pieces.

The first project of the year deals with understanding the characteristics of paper, as scholars are creating paper sculptures.  The criteria is tricky - students must create an independently standing sculpture (no more or no less than 8" x 6") where the paper is only attached with glue.  Scissors are provided to help construct the sculpture and help change the paper at least 8 ways.
Example of A+ work.
Understanding of Paper's possibilities is evident here!

8th Grade Weavers

Competition was high when Morehouse and Spelman students were competing for the most productive yarn spooling points!  There were SO many to count, so they are going to have to wait ONE MORE DAY to find out the results of which scholar won the prize.

This week we embark on continuing on the loom and beginning to figure out our patterns for the weaving project.  THEN...what else can we weave and what can we weave with??????

There have been varied results from the "Understanding Comics" test.  Study and make sure you understand the vocabulary.  We are going to be creating our own graphic novels this year, so it is vital that students 'get' what they read about over the summer.
BRING YOUR BOOK, "UNDERSTANDING COMICS" by Scott McCloud to your Art Class (Monday for both SPELMAN AND MOREHOUSE STUDENTS) for the final chance to gain credit for the SUMMER ASSIGNMENT.

QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY OF THIS?  EMAIL MS. HILLMAN: jhillman@cpcsschool.org

8TH GRADE TEST REVIEW

8th Grade "Understanding Comics" Test Review

"Understanding Comics" Vocabulary - Spelman: Test Wednesday & Morehouse: Test NEXT Tuesday.

Comics: "Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer."

Sequence - a particular order in which related events, movements, or things follow each other.

Cartoon: “An approach to picture-making—a style…” (21) Often used by comic creators, often describes a single panel and is a less realistic approach to drawing a subject.

Icon: “Any image used to represent a person, place, thing or idea” (27).

Splash page: a full page drawing, often including the title and credits as the first page of a comic book

Narrative box: narrative boxes are used to convey information not easily understood through thought or speech bubbles and drawings

Pictorial Vocabulary: language (words), the picture plane (drawings/representations) and reality

Closure: “the phenomenon of observing the parts but perceiving the whole” (63).

Gutter: the space between the panels

Panel (frame): the space that acts as a sort of indicator that space and time is being divided

Panel-to-Panel Transitions:
1.Moment-to-moment: creates a clear visual from one second to the next; requires very little closure (a small movement such as closing eyes)
2. Action-to-action: similar to moment-to-moment but provides more closure of an event.  Often ends with an action word…such as a batter hitting a baseball and seeing the word: “POW!”
3. Subject-to-subject: the movement between two or more different subjects while maintaining a scene or idea.
4. Scene-to-scene: can provide a way for authors to make a great leap in time; this requires much reader participation
5. Aspect-to-aspect: this transition bypasses time and shows the reader different aspects of a place, idea, or mood by helping readers focus on the surroundings
6. Non-sequitur: no logical relationship between two panels.

Mono-sensory Medium: “relies on ONLY ONE of the senses to convey a world of experience” (89)

Bleed: when a panel runs off the edge of the page

Motion Line: aka ‘zip ribbon’. Represent the paths of moving objects through space (111). Often done by streaking or blurring.

****8th Grade has a test on the summer reading "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art" by Scott McCloud.  THE TEST IS GOING TO BE DURING THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2014.  We will be looking at the reading in the coming weeks.

7th Grade Project 1 (FAMU & Howard)

What are the properties of paper?  We are learning about PAPER as a MATERIAL and how it can can be changed to fit our artistic needs.
The properties of paper discovered will dictate how the paper sculpture will be created.  The criteria for this project will be shared soon.

6th Grade Project 1 (Hampton & FISK)

Scholars are being tested on their knowledge of paint brushes and how to clean them properly.  After they earn their paintbrush license, they will begin a project specifically dealing with the Pop Art movement and one of its major players, Andy Warhol.

5th Grade Project 1 - (Xavier & Tuskegee)

Learning about the 5 kind of lines and 5 line variations is incorporated into the first design project.  Scholars are going to also reflecting on who they are as students and artists in the Profile Portrait Project.

Let's get started!

Welcome back to school!
This is a guy you are going to know more about very soon!
Jean-Michel Basquiat: you will know him soon.
This blog is going have copies/link of important information for your art class this year.  BOOKMARK IT, READ IT, CHECK IT OFTEN!

While the Art Class syllabus is going to be distributed and available online soon, it is important that all parents/guardians and scholars are aware of the late policy of art assignments:
Assignments

All assignments have been created with care and are assigned for the purpose of assessing what you know and can do.  It allows me to provide you with the feedback you need to develop as a reader and writer.
·      Late work is not helpful.
o   Failure to turn in work on time results may create a gap in your learning which will, in turn, lower your grade.
§  For example: For every day your assignment is late, you score will be reduced by 5%.  On the fifth day, the maximum grade possible on that assignment is 75%.  After five days, the assignment will no longer be eiligible to receive credit, but will be collected in order to provide you with crucial feedback on your progress.
·      Missed assignments are your responsibility.
o   If you have an excused absence that keeps you from either turning in an assignment or receiving instructions for an assignment, it is your duty to talk to me about the assignment as soon as you return.
·      Makeup work may be required.

o   If you do not turn in an assignment, you may have your Park time suspended and/or have detention with me in order to complete the work.  In addition, your grade on that assignment will still receive a late penalty and your parent will be called and notified.

Summer Assignments Keep your creativity FLOWING!

Hello, Scholars!

This blog is going to be where you and your parents/guardians can see what art class assignments are due, see what resources are available and see/read interesting things about art.  Some things will just be for fun, some things will be relevant to what you will be learning in art class and some things will be specific to your interests.
You will need to check this blog DAILY because I am not going to print out extras of any assignment.  Everything will be in this blog.  If you are absent, you can look this information up and not ever hand in a late assignment.

Also, I have read all of your reflections on art class this past year and I am planning to dazzle you with things you requested as well as new materials and techniques.

8th Graders - read the assigned chapters (1-4) in "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud.
Get the PAPERBACKBuy the Paperback version at Amazon, but it doesn't have to be a new copy of the book.

Definitions should be written out with the part of speech (typed if possible).  Use Art Lex OR Happy Scribbles to get the definitions.

FINALLY, HAVE YOUR ART CLASS SUPPLIES ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.  Should you have any problems getting these items, please let me know: jhillman@cpccschool.org

5th, 6th & 7th Graders - Get ready for an amazing year!

Countdown to school happens now!  All of you had the same summer assignment and I hope you have enjoyed the project.  It is important to keep your mind sharp throughout the year.  Look around you and see the art that New York City (and everywhere!) has to offer.

The original photos you are taking for the summer assignment can be saved on an external hard drive or you can print them out in a WORD document (don't make them too large - I don't want you to waste paper or ink).
Definitions should be written out with the part of speech (typed if possible).  Use Art Lex OR Happy Scribbles to get the definitions.

Have your supplies for the first day of class.  Let me know if you have any issues getting these items by emailing me: jhillman@cpccsschool.org.
