8th Grades Take Manhattan

High Line!

We just came back from the High Line and had a great day.  The scholars are TIRED, but a good kind of tired, because they saw a lot of public art and was welcomed into a gallery that we did not expect to visit, Coates & Scarry Gallery on 14th Street (http://www.coatesandscarry.com).

QUESTION #10 from the Field Lab Scavenger Hunt Paper needs to be completed:

10) Describe in detail two of your favorite pieces in your writing journal.  You are required to write two entries (one page each) about your favorite artwork pieces you viewed today.  Include sensory details.

Adios, October! November is the Art Jam!

8th Graders are GOING PLACES

This week the 8th Graders are going to be exploring the High Line and surrounding Art Galleries.  This is in an effort to give them the experience of viewing public art in the beautiful Chelsea area of Manhattan AND in professional gallery settings.

The Weaving Project was a wild success as scholars eventually got the hang of how to make the looms and create their own pieces of woven artwork.  And you ain't seen NOTHING yet...the Pre-Holiday project will build on their knowledge of weaving and scholars will be creating another piece with non-traditional materials. We start this week!
8th Graders really DID get Weavey with it.
BOOK CHARACTER DAY IS A GREAT WAY TO SHOW OFF YOUR CREATIVITY AND ARTISTIC SKILLS.  JOIN OUR PARTY ON FRIDAY!

7th Grade Update on Howard & FAMU

Next project will continue with exploration of paper as a material, this time: COLLAGE.  Students are exploring a challenge they have had to overcome and began working on their collages last week.

6th Grade POP ARTISTS

We are nearing the end of the Pop Art Self-Portrait project...kinda, sorta.  It's time to mount the artwork so it is ready for gallery showing...ask your scholar about the sequences of this project.  Recalling the process is important for their growth as scholars and artists.
Alexis' artwork is TRULY something Andy Warhol would enjoy!

Grade 5 Artists

Being thorough in art class is vital.  Scholars in Xavier and Tuskegee are finishing up their Self-Portrait Profiles and are ready to show off their skills in the VERY, VERY, VERY near future.  The five line variations are going to be our next victims as we master the design skills needed to be able to present ANYTHING in a fancy sort of way.  If you don't know what I mean, you will soon!

Mid-October Art Fest!

Morehouse & Spelman

Weaving projects are due Monday (Spelman) and Tuesday (Morehouse). This project requires a lot of patience and understanding of pattern.  The finished projects will be perfect to hang on walls (after we show them off at school first!).
Look at the "8th Grade Gets Weavey" post for links on how to complete the steps for this project BUT keep your yarn ON the loom.

7th Grader Artists

Abraham got his Bee on!
We been working with paper and creating sculptures of Fierce Animals.  The latest project has been focusing on paper as a material and what is possible when you change it.  Scholars completed their Fierce Animals, chock full of details about what makes their animal fierce to them!

Scholars had one week to create their independently standing sculptures.

Terry created a fierce looking spider...just in time for Halloween!

6th Graders in FISK & Hampton

Our young Pop Artists are nearly done their Pop Art self-portraits in clay.  They are now putting on the finishing touches and learning how to hang and display their art in a professional manner.

Xavier & Tuskegee

The five line variations are the focus of this week's lesson.  Scholars are mastering their skills and putting in their personal touches on their profile collages.  Practice makes perfect and our in-house designers are going to have their artwork dazzling our hallways in the very near future.

October Art Fest!

This week in Art Class - October Art!

I HOPE TO MEET FAMILIES AT CURRICULUM NIGHT THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8.

5th Graders

This week you will need your "ALL ABOUT ME" worksheets you filled out in September.
Xavier and Tuskegee artists continue on their profile portraits and are finishing up the areas outside of their portraits.  QUIZ your scholar what the 5 KINDS of lines are AND the 5 Line Variations...they know them!

The FIVE KINDS OF LINES ARE:
  • Vertical
  • Horizontal
  • Diagonal
  • Zig Zag
  • Curved
The FIVE LINE VARIATIONS ARE:
  • Length
  • Width
  • Texture
  • Directional
  • Degree of Curve
You will see A LOT of these lines in the artwork they are currently making as well as in a mini project we are going to start this week about DESIGNING using the lines above.

6th Grade

We are DEEP into our Pop Art project.  This week, the scholars in FISK & Hampton have put their primer down on the red clay and are ready to start painting their portraits in the style of Pop Artist, Andy Warhol.  If you aren't sure about who Mr. Warhol is, please, ask your scholar...they have been learning about him, his life and the contributions he made as one of the founders of the  Pop Art movement.  Photos are coming very soon, so stay tuned!

7th Grade Artwork this week

FAMU & Howard are completing their first attempt at paper sculpture building.  They had to create a structure that would stand independently using various ways to change the paper.  The ONLY supplies they had at their disposal were: paper, scissors, glue and their knowledge of the attributes of paper.

Art Criticism is a major part of the curriculum and scholars are going to be writing about artwork on a regular basis.  You will see some of their thoughts about "The Gulf Stream" by Winslow Homer on the bulletin board outside of Rm. 322 during CURRICULUM NIGHT on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8th.

8th Grade Morehouse & Spelman

Wednesday is the "Understanding Comics" RE-TEST.  Scholars may not take the test unless permission slips are signed.  Weaving continues as well.  Design decisions are being made and concentration is a must when weaving.  Ask your scholar about HOW they made their looms!

As always, if you have any questions, please email: jhillman@cpcsschool.orgjhillman@cpsccshool.org.  Enjoy your week!

8th Grade Art Test SECOND CHANCE

Scholars have the opportunity to CHOOSE.  They can choose to retake the test on "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud, Chapters 1-4 (assigned over the summer), OR they can choose not to retake the test and keep their original score.

Either way, parents and scholars might sign the permission forms sent home (Morehouse received theirs today (Thursday) and Spelman is receiving them tomorrow (Friday, October 3rd).
